Some verbs completely change their meaning depending on whether they are followed by a gerund (-ing) or an infinitive (to + verb). Here is a quick guide:

Remember

  • + to do: Remember a task or obligation you need to do.
  • + doing: Recall a memory of something you already did in the past.

Forget

  • + to do: Fail to remember to do a required task.
  • + doing: Lose the memory of a past experience.

Mean

  • + to do: Intend to do something.
  • + doing: An action involves or results in something else.

Regret

  • + to do: Formally apologize or politely deliver bad news.
  • + doing: Feel sorry about an action in the past.
